Empowering Women and Girls to Thrive Safely in Digital Spaces

In South Sudan, digital platforms are becoming central to education, civic engagement, and economic opportunity. Yet for countless young women, these advances remain out of reach blocked by unequal access and the persistent threat of online exclusion and harassment. Through the Banat Initiative for Leadership & Digital Development (BiLDD), Digital Rights Frontline (DRF) is determined to change this reality. We are not just celebrating women’s potential, we are unlocking it and ensuring that women and girls can claim their rightful place in the digital world with confidence and security.

Persistent gender gaps in digital literacy, insecure online spaces, and relentless exposure to misinformation and harassment continue to lock women out of meaningful participation. These barriers do more than exclude, they silence voices, stifle ambition, and deprive South Sudan of the full potential of its next generation of leaders. Limiting contributions to public discourse and national development.

Addressing these challenges, DRF in partnership with National Communication Authority implements initiatives that combine skills development with protection. The BiLDD programmes empower young women in high schools and universities with digital literacy, responsible technology use, and leadership skills which blend technical and personal development. The programme prepares participants to pursue academic and professional ambitions while bridging gender gaps in the digital sector.

Complementing skills development, safety in digital spaces remains a priority because empowerment means little without safety. Women and girls in South Sudan are disproportionately affected by cyber harassment, misinformation, and online exploitation, which can deter participation. SafetyComm, a DRF led platform, provides guidance, referrals, and public awareness campaigns to respond to these risks.  By also building the capacity of government, civil society, and private partners to respond to digital threats, SafetyComm is empowering stakeholders to participate in making the online spaces safer.

Together, BiLDD and SafetyComm form a comprehensive approach to a robust digital ecosystem. One equips young women to thrive, the other ensures the spaces they inhabit are secure and supportive, safeguarding their right to participate without fear. True digital inclusion requires both access and protection. It's about protection, equity, and the conviction that no one should be left behind in South Sudan’s digital transformation.

Expanding opportunities for women and girls across South Sudan to engage confidently in education and the digital economy is a strategic investment in the country’s digital future.

By developing skills and safeguarding online participation, DRF is helping forge a digital future that is more equitable and representative of the country’s diverse communities.

Ultimately, investing in women and girls is not just about closing the gender gap, it is about expanding the country’s capacity to grow. Empowering all South Sudanese to participate in nation building and realize their potential as a force for sustainable development.
