Our History
Digital Rights Frontlines (DRF), originally known as #defyhatenow South Sudan, was initiated in early 2014 by r0g_agency for open culture and critical transformation gGmbH (Berlin) in response to the conflict in South Sudan that erupted in late 2013. At its inception, the project aimed to address the role of social media in fueling hate speech and incitement during the civil unrest in South Sudan hence the #tag #defyhatenow.

3. Hate Speech Mitigation
DRF is actively involved in peacebuilding efforts that target hate speech and identity-related conflict, both online and offline. Through training local actors and leveraging tech for peace, we aim to reduce the spread and impact of hate speech in communities. Over the past three years, we have successfully led programs to mitigate conflict in South Sudan, Cameroon, and Ethiopia, drawing on our deep experience in conflict analysis, dialogue facilitation, and prejudice reduction.
4. Fact-Checking and Information Verification
DRF combats misinformation and disinformation through its fact-checking initiatives. Our flagship program, 211 Check, verifies facts and trains bloggers, journalists, and community members in information verification. Regular fellowship programs provide selected individuals with the skills to become information verifiers, helping to reduce the spread of false information and fostering a culture of truth.

5. Promoting Access to Technology and Connectivity
In underserved communities, DRF works to increase access to technology, empowering local organizations and individuals through digital tools that expand their reach and impact. By providing access to technology, we foster innovation and connectivity, ensuring that more people can participate in the digital revolution.
